Background of the Study
Sleep is a fundamental component of overall health, and sleep disorders can have profound effects on mental well-being, particularly among older adults. In Rivers State, many elderly individuals suffer from sleep disturbances such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome, which can exacerbate mental health issues including depression and anxiety (Chukwu, 2023; Adebola, 2024). Sleep disorders disrupt the restorative processes of the brain, impair cognitive function, and reduce quality of life. Despite the critical role of sleep in maintaining mental health, many older adults in Rivers State are not routinely screened or treated for sleep-related problems due to limited healthcare resources and a lack of awareness. The complex interplay between sleep quality and mental health necessitates a comprehensive assessment of how sleep disorders impact the psychological well-being of the elderly. This study seeks to explore the prevalence of sleep disorders among older adults in Rivers State and to examine their association with mental health outcomes, with the ultimate goal of informing interventions that promote better sleep hygiene and mental health.
Statement of the Problem
In Rivers State, sleep disorders are a significant yet often overlooked health issue among older adults. Many elderly individuals experience poor sleep quality, which contributes to an increased risk of mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairment. The lack of regular sleep assessments in primary healthcare settings and limited access to specialized sleep clinics exacerbate the problem, leaving many older adults untreated. Additionally, cultural attitudes towards aging and sleep may lead to the normalization of sleep disturbances, reducing the likelihood that individuals seek help. This situation not only deteriorates mental health outcomes but also increases the overall burden on healthcare services. Without targeted interventions to improve sleep quality, the mental health of older adults in Rivers State will continue to decline, further impacting their daily functioning and quality of life.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence of sleep disorders among older adults in Rivers State.
2. To examine the relationship between sleep quality and mental health outcomes in this population.
3. To propose strategies for improving sleep hygiene and mental health among older adults.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of sleep disorders among older adults in Rivers State?
2. How do sleep disorders impact mental health outcomes such as depression and anxiety?
3. What interventions can improve sleep quality and thereby enhance mental health?
Research Hypotheses
1. Poor sleep quality is significantly associated with increased depression and anxiety among older adults.
2. Lack of awareness and treatment for sleep disorders contributes to poor mental health outcomes.
3. Implementing sleep hygiene education programs will significantly improve mental health in this population.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on older adults (aged 60 and above) in both urban and rural areas of Rivers State. Data will be collected via sleep quality assessments, mental health screening tools, and interviews. Limitations include potential self-report bias and difficulties in diagnosing sleep disorders without specialized equipment.
